The Mlakar Brothers Orchestra is known for their Slovenian style polka music across the United States. Originally called the Continentals, the band began around 1968 with two of the four Mlakar boys, Joe L. and Fred. Also in the band were Bob Rideout and John Tolich. After Rideout and Tolich left the band, Joe L. and Fred decided to change the name to the Mlakar Brothers Orchestra and invite their father, Joe, to play with them. Ed Kiefer also joined the band in later years. Together, the Mlakar Brothers cut three records, Alkrabolt, Alkrabolt II, and the Elbow Room Party.
For many years, the Mlakar Brothers gained their popularity from playing in the Mlakar Elbow Room on Sierra Ave. in Fontana, CA. During the annual Fontana Days Parade, many enjoyed watching the Elbow Room float, pulled by decorated horses, pass by with the Mlakar Brothers on board in their authentic Slovenian costumes, winning them several trophies.
After thirty-one years of operation, the Mlakar Elbow Room, owned by Joe, closed in the early ninetys. However, the Mlakar Brothers continue to entertain the polka crowd with their talents. They can most often be seen at the Slovene Hall in Fontana, CA and Elks Lodge in Garden Grove, CA. They are a popular band during Oktoberfests, often playing for the Oktoberfests in Arrowhead, CA and in Las Vegas. The band also performs for personal parties including anniversaries, birthdays, and weddings.
